OwlCrate: June 2017 Box

Hello friends! This month I received my first OwlCrate box. June’s theme was “Make It Out Alive”. I was super excited to receive my box and even more excited to share what I got with you guys 🙂 keep reading below to find out what was in my June OwlCrate box.

Receiving a package in the mail is probably one of the greatest feelings. When I saw my OwlCrate package at my front step, I made an unnatural noise and ripped it open before I even got inside.

The first item I received was a Divergent themed bath bomb. I absolutely LOVE bath bombs. I buy dozens of bath bombs a month from Lush. When I saw this I was so excited! And what’s even more cool is that when you use these bath bombs, they contain a charm that will sort you into your faction. I haven’t used this yet, but I’ll report back with where I end up. (Created by Fizzy Fairy Apothecary)

The next item I pulled out was a double sided bookmark by Hey Atlas Creative. This bookmark contains a reference to A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas which was super cool because I just finished reading my first Sarah J. Maas book (review coming soon)!

Okay, so this is probably my favorite item in this months box. I received a Zombie Sleep Mask from Archie McPhee to go along with the “Make It Out Alive” theme. I’ve wanted a sleep mask for a while and now I have the coolest one.

The next item I pulled out was a patch from Laserbrain Patch Co. The patch has a black and white background with a right red apple from the novel, The Giver. I had to read The Giver in English class and I really liked it… but I don’t really wear patches or have a need for patches, so I’m not sure I’ll actually use this.

I was most excited to see which book I’d receive and it turns out we get two this month! The first is New World Rising by Jennifer Wilson which I can’t wait to dive into. The bonus book is The Sandcastle Empirr by Kayla Olson which came with an exclusive OwlCrate cover and a signed bookplate! I can’t wait to read both of these so look out for my reviews soon.

And finally, I received a magnet that says “Fear is only your enemy if you allow it to be” which is inspired by An Ember in the Ashes. I haven’t read this yet, but I love magnets and I really like the font on this one. I also got a sticker sheet from The Sandcastle Empire and a small themed pin. I don’t really use pins so I probably won’t have much need for this. I also don’t know where I’d put the stickers so I probably won’t use those either.

(Featuring Yoda, who wouldn’t let me take my pictures in peace) Overall, I’d rate my first OwlCrate box an 8/10. I loved that we received two books this month as well as a bath bomb and sleep mask. I can’t wait to dive into the books I received while taking a nice bath 🙂 But there were a few items that I know will end up in my junk drawer and for $30/month I’d like to be able to use every item I get. I’ll report back with July’s box before determining if I’m going to continue my subscription!

Fandom Friday: Fantasy Edition

Hello friends! Hope you all had a great week 🙂 welcome to another Fandom Friday. This week my top 5 picks consisted of all things fantasy. Check them out below and let me know what you think!

1.) Angelic Rune Phone Case

Of course we had to start it off with The Mortal Instruments. TMI is my favorite series of all time. I absolutely love Cassandra Clare and her writing and her beautiful stories. And I absolutely love this phone case. The pastels, the rose gold, the flowers… I love it so much that I’m probably going to buy it myself (are you even surprised?)

2.) Shatter Me Notebook

So, I really love this next pick. The Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi is also one of my favorite series that I’ve read several times (team Warner). And with the announcement that she’ll be continuing the series, this notebook spoke to me. It includes one of my favorite quotes from the book. If you haven’t read it, stop whatever you’re doing and go read it. And then buy this notebook and write down how much you loved it.

3.) Throne of Glass Notebook

Okay so I’m currently reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas and I’m friggin loving it so you know I had to include something in my top 5 picks. While I haven’t gotten to this part yet, I know this is a very popular quote. And I know I already chose a notebook, but look how pretty this looks! And you can never have enough notebooks… But for those of you who want this design as a poster, t-shirt, or phone case – you can also get those by clicking the link above! That’s why I love RedBubble – all the designs can be transferred to different products.

4.) The Darkest Minds T-Shirt

I absolutely LOVED The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken. Go read it now! You may lose 3 days of your life like I did when I couldn’t put it down until I finished. So of course, I’m buying this t-shirt. The book is filled with humor and romance and ugh. I want to read it again.

5.) Legend Wall Tapestry

This wall tapestry features a quote from Legend by Marie Lu. I haven’t read this yet, but it’s on my TBR list! I know a lot of you love this series so I thought I’d include something that I liked on my list. This wall tapestry is really cute for over your bed or near a reading corner. I may have to make this my next read so I can buy this!

And that takes us to the very end of my list. I hope you guys liked these products and maybe even thought about buying one for yourself (or a friend) 😉 let me know in the comments below what you think and some suggestions for next weeks Fandom Friday!

Life Update

Hello friends! I’ve been super busy the past few days because I graduated from college yesterday 🙂

After 5 long years, I graduated from Drexel University with honors. Exciting stuff! I’m also in the process of packing my life into boxes because I’m moving into a new apartment very soon. Because of this I haven’t had time to read much, but I plan on finishing Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas this week. I should have my review up either this weekend or on Monday.

I’m also expecting my first ever OwlCrate box to ship this week so look out for a review on what kind of goodies I get very soon.

I’ll leave you guys with my favorite quote of the week:

“I spent my life folded between the pages of books.

In the absence of human relationships I formed bonds with paper characters. I lived love and loss through stories threaded in history; I experienced adolescence by association. My world is one interwoven web of words, stringing limb to limb, bone to sinew, thoughts and images all together. I am a being comprised of letters, a character created by sentences, a figment of imagination formed through fiction.”

– Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me

Fandom Friday: My Top 5 Picks This Week

Hello friends and happy Friday! Since I’m constantly seeing awesome bookish merch/decor/trinkets/gifts (and I obviously can’t buy it all myself) I’ve decided to share some of my finds with you guys every week so I can live vicariously through you 😉

On Fandom Fridays, I’ll post my top 5 favorite finds for certain fandoms (feel free to send me requests!). Since this is my first week, I chose items relating to books in general.

Keep reading to find out my top 5 this week and drop a comment below to let me know what you think!

1.) Bookstore Scented Candle

I actually own this candle along with another candle that smells like The Shire from Etsy user FrostBeard. I love this candle, and I’ve had it for over a year and it hasn’t burned out yet. It smells like a bookstore and I swear it’s the most calming scent. An added bonus is that it’s made from soy and I can’t even begin to list the advantages of a soy candle, but I will: lasts 40% longer, doesn’t release toxins, less likely to trigger allergies, cleaner burning, etc. etc. etc.

I definitely recommend this candle from experience. What’s better than pajamas, a cup of tea, a cozy reading nook, and the scent of books all around you? Answer: nothing.

FrostBeard has tons of other scents so go check it out!

2.) Just One More Chapter Pillow

This pillow speaks to my soul.

Just last night I fell asleep face first in Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I’m honestly 100% likely to purchase this myself so I figured I’d share it with the people who can relate.

I mean seriously how cute is this? I love the color scheme and the font and the little coffee cup. Check it out on RedBubble and it even gives you the option to buy the design as a shirt/phone case/poster!

3.) BookHero Book Sleeve

So I actually heard about these Book/iPad sleeves from someone on the BookCon app, but basically they’re like cute little sweaters for your books. I saw this particular book sleeve and I had to have it. I am a huge Doctor Who fan, but Etsy user BlackVioletNYC has plenty of other designs to choose from!

Book sleeves are useful for protecting your book covers and can even be used to hold your pages while reading. 10/10 would definitely recommend buying one for yourself or even as a gift. It’ll change the way you read.

4.) The Book Was Better Wall Decal

Why do I love this so much? Because it’s always gonna be true. This cute wall decal can be used over your desk, bed, and even over your bookshelves! You can buy it in different sizes and different colors from Etsy user iinky. She also has tons more designs and phrases to choose from!

Need I say more? This decal speaks the truth.

5.) Travel Mug

As you may have already guessed, I’m going to buy this travel mug for myself. I love to bring a book and read in Starbucks or at Barnes and Noble and I don’t go anywhere without a cup of coffee first. This is definitely going to be my go-to travel mug.

Society6 has hundreds of designs that you can transfer to shirts, prints, mugs, notebooks, etc. Check them out!

*FYI, you get 10 cents off your drink at Starbucks if you BYOC (bring your own cup)

And that brings us to the end of my list! I had dozens of other items I wanted to talk about but I had to limit it to 5 or we’d be here forever (just kidding you can buy the mug above Here). Let me know what you guys think and feel free to send me your Etsy shop or other website and I’ll check out your products 🙂

BookCon 2017: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Spring time – my most favorite time of year… and not just because it happens to be my birthday 😉 Every year for the last four years I’ve attended the book convention lovingly known as BookCon at the Javits Center in New York City (aside from that one time I traveled all the way to Chicago for it…). Nonetheless it was back in my city this year and I received Saturday and Sunday tickets as a birthday present! I typically save up for VIP tickets, but they increased the price this year and it just didn’t seem worth it.

My boyfriend and I took the bus from Philly to NYC at 5:45 am and got to our hotel around 8 am. Having been to BookCon three other times I knew I didn’t want to go wait on line several hours early. I had my autographing tickets to see Stephen Chbosky and Nicola Yoon and I didn’t care much to see any of the main stage panels.

I’ve been to BookCon four times and yet every year it feels different since the BookCon crew is still trying to figure out how to organize this event. There were plenty of good, plenty of bad, and definitely some ugly things about this year.

The Good:

  • I met my favorite author Stephen Chbosky and he was so kind and took the time to speak to every person on line despite having his signing go way over schedule. This annoyed some people, but I found it so great how down to earth he was.
  • Many of the panels I wanted to see were in 1E meeting rooms at the Javits center and in the past I had a really hard time getting into these, but this year I got to see every panel I lined up for.
  • It seemed to be a lot less crowded this year and more relaxed (maybe because I wasn’t so stressed out about missing panels)
  • Staff finally figured out an efficient way to line people up in the 1E waiting rooms – last year it was a free for all and people would cut into different rows.

The Bad:

  • Autographing tickets went up May 22nd at 12 pm and there was very little direction given on how to acquire them. I had to go on and choose the two author signings I wanted for Saturday and then go on again and choose for Sunday. By the time I got to Sunday, everything was gone. I luckily got the authors I wanted for Saturday, but it was extremely unfair to people who couldn’t get on at 12 pm. They should’ve released a certain # of tickets on separate dates leading up to BookCon.
  • Main stage panels weren’t great. I wasn’t as excited for them as I had been in the past few years. And BookCon repeatedly told everyone that they would need to scan their badge to see a main stage panel. I rushed to the Queue Hall and it was… completely empty. Because security abandoned this idea when they realized how inefficient it was. They seriously need to figure out their stuff because it’s been four years!
  • The moderator for Cassandra Clare’s panel spoiled a lot for me. This isn’t anyone’s fault, but I wish she wouldn’t have!!!

The Ugly:

  • The Show Floor was a disaster. I didn’t even attempt to get any ARC’s or swag. The lines were wrapped around several booths over a TOTE BAG! It was insane. I heard about people getting screwed over at the Penguin Booth which made me so sad. I also waited on line for almost an hour to spin a wheel at OwlCrate and I won a bag of tea…
  • Not as much free stuff at certain booths. I guess I can’t demand free stuff, but I always look forward to getting a Book Shimmy bag and they didn’t have them this year.
  • Some people were straight up nasty! I always meet the nicest people at BookCon, but this year I saw a lot of people cutting in line and being overall rude.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, the good outweighed the bad and I had an amazing time. I saw Rainbow Rowell, Cassandra Clare, Morgan Matson, Jenny Han, Krysten Ritter, Kevin Hart, Bill Nye, and lots more! I’m happy I didn’t waste my money on VIP tickets as I achieved everything I wanted without them.

I’ll definitely be back next year and I really hope they can finally figure their problems out. I’m not giving up yet!

On a related note, we stayed at this futuristic hotel called Yotel NYC. If you have to spend the weekend in NYC, and wish to be close to the Javits Center, I highly recommend this hotel! We were so close to Times Square and Hells Kitchen. We ate at an amazing Italian restaurant and saw Wonder Woman at the AMC in Times Square. This hotel is a great, affordable place to stay for a fun weekend visit.

I’m already counting down the days until next year 🙂
